4 filmmakers, 4 MoVI setups.

It's no secret we love our Freefly MoVI M5 and M10 at Story & Heart—the diversity in camera movement that's possible with a single tool is unparalleled.

Equally as important, the Freefly team are great people—filmmakers themselves—who understand it's not just about pushing creative limits, but also showing up on set with a reliable and battle-tested tool that will handle anything you throw at it.

Out of the box, the MoVI is simple to get up and running quickly with a camera and lens.

But, where do you go from there?

Monitors, microphones, cables, follow focus kits, cases—there are an infinite amount of ways to customize your setup—where should you start?

Care of 4 Story & Heart filmmakers, here are 4 MoVI setups to inspire you to get the most out of your movement.

Stillmotion

With the Freefly MoVI we can truly put Story First when it calls for fluid camera movement.

The MoVI allows us to push the limits of what’s possible, often with little training and a small crew. Hanging out the back of a van for a car commercial we can pull off shots that would normally require a much bigger, more expensive setup, with just two people and 30 minutes to setup. This means we can offer more to our clients, be more efficient and be able to move from setup to setup quickly.

And for me [Joyce] personally I’ve struggled with the use of Steadicam and Glidecam because of my size but now with the M10 I’m finally able to have access to shots that were previously not an option for me, and that is incredibly exciting.

31Films / Film Lab Creative

It’s the type of production value that puts everything over the top.

The MoVI system has allowed us to think of movement, momentum and scene transitions in ways that we were limited in before. Scenes or concepts that would have required time/gear/crew beyond a projects budget or schedule are now completely possible—and very fun to create. What we specifically love about the MoVI, compared to other systems we’ve used is that it’s just so incredibly reliable.

On a high-pressure or time sensitive project, you need a tool that will deliver what you need from it, every time. The M5 has been that tool where we can achieve stellar take after stellar take, and simply concern ourselves with scene direction and camera movement, not technical troubleshooting. It’s definitely added a spectrum to our filmmaking that we did not have before its existence, and for the right story or project.

Mike Sutton of Frozen Prosperity

It is so versatile as it can be handheld, used with an EasyRig, mounted to a Steadicam or stage, mounted as a robot head on a jib or used on an Octocopter.  I cannot think of any other stabilizer that has that many options.

I was lucky to get one of the first Freefly MoVI M10 units on the East Coast last August.  As a Steadicam operator since 1996, it has opened a lot of creative doors that were limited in the past to vest and arm based shooting.  I had already had a fair amount of experience with brushless gimbals before the MoVI was available to the public but what amazed me most was the stability, support and build quality.

When the M5 came out I fell in love with how it was good to go, right out of the box. The first day I put a camera on the M5, which was well above the weight rating, I was shooting with it in seconds.  I even inverted the rig with a 1Dc and realized that Freefly was an innovator.  I got jobs shooting with the MoVI right away and it's still asked for by name due to its solid reputation in the field.

Joe Simon of The Delivery Men

The MoVI M10 has helped us to really push our moving shots to a whole new level.

We're now able to get perfectly smooth shots in conditions that would have been close to impossible in the past with other small handheld devices. For example - Shooting out of cars, on a ropes course, lowering the camera multiple levels on a rope etc.

Not only that, if you have ever tried to shoot any type of wide shot on a Glidecam/Steadicam you know how hard it is to hold a horizon line, with the MoVI it's perfect every time.

It also opens up lots of doors to try new shots, going from super low to super high, passing the camera between operators and using the remote control to get even more precise control. We will opt many times to just use the M10 instead bringing other tools because we can achieve many different types of shots faster with one tool. It's an amazing tool and I can't imagine not having it!
